How to K.I.S.S.

Complexity is easy. Keeping it simple is difficult and an art. Here’s how to get to the point quickly and simply:

1 Use simple language

Complicated language and long-winded explanations are boring. Your workmates are not motived or inspired by corporate or technical jargon. They likely don’t get excited by “growing sales”, “cost optimisation”, or “resource allocation”. Using simple, everyday language helps your workmates to have clarity, get excited and get into action faster.

2 Practice the ‘Rule of 3’

Long lists are confusing, complicated and hard to remember. Prioritising your thoughts and actions into just 3 things makes it manageable – for you and your workmates.

Sharing your ideas in groups of 3 makes it more easily processed, easier to remember and follow.  Your workmates will only remember about 3 things from your conversation, presentation, or email, so don’t overwhelm them with many messages.

3 Communicate what and why

Your workmates want to know not just what the goal is but more importantly why it matters and how that will benefit them. The bigger the why the more likely your workmates will be able to achieve it. Be precise to summarise this into just two simple sentences.
