How to reduce stress and leave work at work

All too often you take the emotions and happenings of the day with you when you leave the office. You might feel annoyed with a workmates attitude, frustrated with the lack of progress of a project or generally overwhelmed with all that needs to get done. Taking those feeling with you when you leave work for the day serves no-one. It affects your mood for the evening, the quality of time spent with family and friends and impacts your sleep quality.

Here are our top 3 ways to break the cycle and leave work at work.

1 Use your commute time to let it go

Use music, podcasts or a guided meditation to rest your mind. Whether it’s soothing classical, rhythmic jazz or the latest pop, set up some playlists that match the mood you want. Pop in your headphones, switch off from your email, breathe and enjoy the ride home. If you drive, you have the added choice of singing along – which can be highly therapeutic too.

2 Build exercise into a daily habit

The best stress-buster is moving physically. Find an outlet after work that you enjoy, works your body plus requires you to focus – such a boxing, squash, yoga or a team sport. This is a great way to switch off your mind and take care of your physical wellbeing. You can mix up your routine to keep in interesting and your motivation high.

3 Get active in your community

Focusing on others is a good distraction from your own worries and makes you feel good too. Get involved with a local charity, join a choir, become a mentor and share your experience and knowledge with others or take up an evening course. All these activities help to build your mindset for success and are great ways to put things into perspective.

Use these simple tips to switch off your “work brain”.
